Extensive Reading

Extensive Reading (ER) is a well-researched approach to language learning that encourages students to read a large number of books that are easy to understand. Students choose their own books and learn to read through them quickly.

ER often uses “grader reader” books that have been specially prepared with controlled vocabulary and grammar but easier than their reading level. The goal is to help the students to engage their imaginations and enjoy reading rather than making it feel like studying.

Through repeated exposure to the vocabulary and syntax of the target language, the learner can eventually internalize how the words of the language are actually used and help them better understand and even create in the language.

At Fiat Lux, we incorporate ER into our English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English Language Development (ELD) programs to give our students an edge over other English language learners. We do this by offering our students access to 100s of books through the use of tablet technology.

Good things happen to students who read a great deal in a new language.

Research studies show they become better and more confident readers, they write better, their listening and speaking abilities improve, and their vocabularies get richer.

In addition, they develop positive attitudes toward and increased motivation to study a new language.
